- Accident
- An undesired incident or event that results in injury, fatality, damage to the vessel, cargo, environment, or a 3rd party

- Incident
- A general term for an unforeseen occurrence and has no direct classification. An event or chain of events which has caused or could have caused injury, illness and / or damage to assets, the environment or third parties

- Any cut, fracture, sprain, amputation etc. which results from a work incident or exposure involving a single event in the work environment

- MSDS
- Material Safety Data Sheet - A sheet issued by a manufacturer of chemical substances that sets out the hazards likely to be encountered by those who come into contact with the substance. The sheet may also identify recovery procedures following adverse exposure
- Near Miss
- An undesired incident or event that could have led to an accident had the situation been allowed to develop, circumstances were slightly different or had some additional factor contributed to the event.
- Non-conformance
- A non-conformance is an unplanned occurrence or item which does not meet a specification or requirement. A non-conformance is a non-fulfillment of any requirement of the Safety Management System. A non-conformance is basically anything that does not conform to the documented Safety Management System.
- Occupational Illness
- An abnormal health condition or disorder (physical or mental) that is caused or aggravated by exposure to environmental factors associated with employment, including chemical, physical, biological or ergonomic factors
- Occupational Injury
- Work related physical injury or illness which results in death, being unfit to work the day following the event, restriction of work or motion including temporary or permanent transfer to another job
- Performance Indicator
- A specific measure to describe management, operational process or performance
- PTW
- Permit To Work - A formal written system used to control certain types of work which are identified as hazardous. It also means a communication between site, vessel, plant and installation management, supervisors and operators and those who carry out the work

- Restricted Work Case (RWC)
- Any case where the Medical Treatment diagnosis provides for Restricted Work – Bourbon Offshore does not make any separate classifications regarding Restricted Work and therefore all Restricted Work cases are reportable as Medical Treatment, however for assessment purposes the incident report should indicate if Work Restriction was prescribed to assist with determining the accident severity
- Risk
- The chance that a specified undesirable event will occur
- Risk Assessment
- A careful consideration by competent persons of the hazards associated with a task. The potential effect of each hazard, how severe it might be and the likelihood of its occurring should be considered to determine the effort required to make the work site as safe as reasonably possible

- Toxic
- The characteristic of a chemical substance to produce injury once it reaches a susceptible site in or on the body. The effects may be acute or chronic, local or systemic
- TRIR
- Total Recordable Incidents Rate
- Unsafe Act
- Any act that deviates from a recognized safe way or specified method of doing a job and increases the potential for an accident
